For many of us, it is not easy to change our eating habits. The purpose of food is solely to nourish our bodies. Each time we reach for a ‘treat’, or go for something to eat even though we don’t feel hungry, we need to pause for a moment to ask ourselves whether our body needs this food or whether it is serving another purpose.


The feeling of hunger is commonly modified by bad eating habits, so you often feel hungry even when you are just dehydrated for example. So next time you feel hungry, try initially just drinking a glass of water to curb the hunger response. At other times what we really need is sleep, or exercise, someone to talk to, or a hug.


Our eating habits begin very early in childhood. When we were young and upset, many of us were soothed with a cookie, ice cream, or other sweets. ‘Treats’ were something we knew were not good for us. Though giving short-term happiness, in the long run confectioneries and other unhealthy foods cause us more strife than they are worth. As we learn how difficult it becomes to fix our own diets, it is time now to put an end to this - we must stop doing to our children what the previous generation did to us

Rather than starve yourself of the foods that give you that high, you will be better off adding on the better variety of more nutritious food, to what you are already eating. We soon find that as we feel better, we want to eat well to maintain our health.
